Carson, California – Deportivo Toluca FC has emerged as the ultimate champions of Mexican football for the 2024-25 season, securing the prestigious Campeón de Campeones trophy with a commanding 3-1 victory over Club América. The highly anticipated one-off final, held at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, on Sunday night (July 20, 2025), showcased Toluca's tactical prowess and clinical finishing.

The match, a clash between the Liga MX Apertura 2024 champions (Club América) and the Clausura 2025 champions (Toluca), lived up to its billing as a battle of titans. While Club América, co-holders of the record for most Campeón de Campeones titles with seven, aimed to add another to their illustrious history, Toluca, with four titles to their name, were hungry to mark a new era of dominance.

The game started with a bang, as América's Alejandro Zendejas found the net early, giving Las Águilas a dream start. However, Toluca, under the guidance of coach Antonio Mohamed, quickly regrouped and began to assert their presence. They employed a disciplined defensive strategy, disrupting América's attacking rhythm with timely challenges and fouls, which seemed to unsettle their opponents.

Just before halftime, Bruno Méndez leveled the score for Toluca with a crucial header, shifting the momentum dramatically. The second half saw Toluca continue their assertive play, creating dangerous counter-attacks. Paulinho sealed the victory in the 70th minute, scoring Toluca's third goal and effectively putting the game out of reach for América.

Adding to América's frustration, Igor Lichnovsky was shown a red card in the 89th minute for a reckless challenge, reducing his side to ten men and further diminishing any faint hopes of a comeback.

This victory is particularly sweet for Toluca, coming off their impressive Clausura 2025 triumph, where they defeated powerhouses like Monterrey, Tigres UANL, and ultimately América in the final (a 2-0 aggregate win after two goalless draws in the previous legs). The Campeón de Campeones title not only adds significant silverware to their cabinet but also sends a strong message to the rest of Liga MX ahead of the new season.

The rivalry between Club América and Toluca has been intensifying in recent years, with their encounters often producing captivating football. Historically, América holds a slight edge in their head-to-head record in competitive matches, but Toluca has demonstrated their ability to rise to the occasion, particularly in high-stakes playoff scenarios. This latest triumph further cements Toluca's status as a formidable force in Mexican football.

As the new Liga MX season begins, all eyes will be on both these teams, with Toluca riding high on their championship success and América eager to bounce back from this significant defeat. The stage is set for another thrilling chapter in their compelling rivalry.
