Some few days ago, miscreants believed to be criminal herders struck at Yelewata community in Benue State, leading to the death of about 200 people.

Since the attack was launched , there have been speculations by some people, tying the attack to various causes with mismatches.

Among the suggested causes of the attack on Yelewata community was religion. Although there may not be enough reasons to strike out the suggestion, it is important to recall that crisis in the Middle belt (North Central geopolitical zone), has been reoccurring for age long and the cause has never had religious affiliation.

Crisis in Benue has never been different from crises that have been rocking other middle belt states. Crisis that rocked Yelewata recently may have no religious coloration as previous crisis in the region had been frequently tied to ethnicity, farmers-herders or communal crisis.

Likewise, the recent incident of killing in Yelewata community of Benue State is likely tiable to  farmers-herders crisis. 

However, the attack is likely launched by mixture of both Nigerian and foreign herders, a tradition that is common in the region.

So far, there is no indication that show the attackers shieved the victims by religious indicator.
