Godwin Emwfiele A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has ordered the embattled Governor of the country’s apex bank, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele to appear before it on or before January 25, 2024, to explain what he knows about the $53 million-judgment debt arising from the Paris Club refund.
According to the DailyPost, Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Abuja High Court, while delivering a short ruling on a case before it insisted on Tuesday that Emefiele must appear before the court on or before January 25, 2024, or he will be declared wanted by the court order.
Audu Anuga (SAN), counsel to the CBN and Emefiele had stated before the Judge that his client, Emefiele was unable to present himself in court because he was in custody.
Recall that Emefiele was immediately picked up by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after he was released by the Department of State Service (DSS) which previously picked him for illegal possession of firearms after a court freed him from a previous arrest made on him by the DSS,
Anuga stated that attempts have been made to ensure the release of Emefiele by a court order but all have proven abortive in the process. Anuga, therefore, prayed for settlement because the CBN has a new Governor and the parties involved in the case have been using settlement in the past.
However, Justice Inyang turned down Anuga’s plea for settlement and insisted Emefiele must appear in court on the next adjourned day which was slated for January 25th, 2024 or he would be declared wanted for arrest.
