Ahead of the recently conducted February 25th presidential election in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was enmeshed in a crucial political crisis leading the party into fractions, along which is the emergence of the "G5 Governors".

G5 Governors is a political clique among the 14 States under the control of the PDP. They were aggrieved and unsatisfied with the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate of the party and the stay of Iyorchia Ayu as the National Chairman of the party. They demand that since it would not be east for Atiku Abubakar to drop his ambition and forfeit the presidential ticket to a Southerner, the National Chairman of the Party, Iyorchia Ayu should be vacate his swat and allow a Southerner to take over as the Party National Chairman.

The G5 Governors make the request with the hope of engendering equity and unity among members of the party. Unfortunately, Atiku Abubakar who later had the backing of the G5 Governors turned deafening ears to the demand and went to the elections with all northerners at the helm of affairs of the PDP structures.

This inflated the grievances of the G5 Governors which included Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and Samuel Ortom of Benue State.

The G5 Governors, except Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi who was allege to unprovably deviated at the wee hour to the election, all agreed to work against PDP at the poll. They stood on their ground that if neither Atiku nor Ayu could make sacrifice for unity and equity of the citizens of Nigeria, the PDP does not deserve to occupy the Aso Rock with Atiku in power.

A few days to the election, some citizens began to wonder what would be the gain of the G5 governors. Many people even believed that they will later withdraw their agitation and support their party, PDP, out of fear of uncertainty, but for anyone who understands politics, the G5 Governors have a lot to gain, even they are also recounting their loss.

Except Nyesom Wike who is not on ballot for any political contest and Governor Seyi Makinde who is yet to conduct his 2nd term governorship election, three other members of the G5 Governors lost their senatorial ambitions to their opponents. That's their loss.

However, the G5 Governors have convincingly achieved their aim which is mainly to deny Atiku Abubakar his presidential ambition, at all cost.

Remarkably, PDP lost in Abia, Enugu, Rivers, Oyo and Benue states which were under the control of the party. This might not have been possible without the support of the G5 Governors.
