One of the 109 members of the National Assembly (Senate), Senator (Dr) Ned Nwoko has unveiled his intention to sponsor a bill that will allow Nigerians living abroad to fully take part in the Nigerian electoral system, in the future time.
Senator Nwoko who represents Delta North Senatorial District proposes that the inclusion of Nigerians in the Diaspora in the country's electoral system will assist Nigeria to benefit from their expertise.
Senator Nwoko also suggested that four seats from both Senate and House 9f of Representatives would be reserved for Nigerians in Diaspora if his bill is passed in the next constitutional amendment.
Senator Nwoko said "I am seeking an Amendment to the Constitution that will enable Nigerians in Diaspora to participate in Electoral Processes in Nigeria. To be able to vote and be voted for; To have Four permanent seats allocated to them in both chambers one each for America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. The Nigerian diaspora, comprised of millions of Nigerians living abroad, forms a vital and dynamic part of our Nation's Global Community.
"These individuals maintain deep ties to their homeland and possess a wealth of knowledge, experience, and resources that can contribute significantly to Nigeria's growth and development. In recognizing the importance of their engagement, It is imperative to explore avenues for their active participation in our electoral processes.
"This seeks to introduce necessary amendments to the Nigerian Constitution, granting Nigerians in the Diaspora the right to vote; the ability to be voted for, and the establishment of dedicated representation in the legislative chambers. By fostering inclusive democracy, we can harness the diverse perspectives and talents of our diaspora, fostering a stronger and more representative Nigeria.
Although the proposed constitutional amendment by Senator Nwoko may not scale through, for some critical reasons peculiar to Nigeria, the bill won't be heard on the floor of the house until the third quarter of 2024 when the Senate President will announce the Constitution Amendment. However, Senator Nwoko has the option of going through the state assemblies, and garnering support for his bill in at least 23 of the 36 States Houses of Assembly.
