Mike Johnson At about some minutes after 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25th, 2023, members of the United States of America’s lower chamber convened to elect a new Speaker of the House after the former Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, was ousted by the House members.
There are 221 Republican Reps and 212 Democrats on the floor of the United States lower chamber. A Rep member needs simple majority votes to become Speaker of the House. At the beginning of the voting session, there were a total of 429 Rep members present on the floor with 220 Republicans and 209 Democrats. With this, a winner would only need at least, 215 votes to emerge. Recall that two Rep members one from Republicans and the other from the Democrats have resigned their memberships. Four other members were absent on the floor of the House during the Speakership voting session.
Mike Johnson’s Path to Victory
Both Democrats and Republicans presented one of their members to vie for the position which was later won by the Republicans Mike Johnson.
In the bid to elect the best replacement for McCarthy, Rep. Elise Stefanik, the Chairman of the House Republican Conference rose to nominate Rep. Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, for the Speaker of the House after winning a shadow election organized by the Republicans Rep members where he defeated Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee who was eliminated in the first vote, Roger Williams of Texas, eliminated in the second vote and Mark Green of Tennessee who dropped out, and Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida in the final round.
In the Republican shadow poll, Johnson scored 128, Donalds scored 29 and, unfortunately, former Speaker of the House, McCarthy who was not in the race scored 43 votes.
Donald Trump Blocked Emmer’s Way; Opens Channel for Johnson
Before Mike Johnson’s ambition, Majority Whip, Tom Emmer of Minnesota had earlier won the nomination by the Republicans but later dropped out after he was seriously opposed by the former President of the country and the party’s national leader, Mr. Donald Trump who called Emmer “RINO” and a “globalist”. Mr. Trump preferred a speaker who would prioritize America above any other country in the world.
Mr. Donald Trump, on his social media platform, TRUTH, claimed “I have many wonderful friends wanting to be speaker of the House, and some are truly great Warriors. RINO Tom Emmer, who I do not know well, is not one of them.”
Speaking further to reject the nomination of Emmer, “…He fought me all the way, and actually spent more time defending Ilhan Omar, than he did me – He is totally out-of-touch with Republican Voters. I believe he has now learned his lesson because he is saying that he is pro-Trump all the way, but who can ever be sure? Has he only changed because that’s the only way to win? The Republican party cannot take that chance, because that’s not where the America First Voters are. Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake,” Mr. Trump stated to end the ambition of Tom Emmer who later dropped his ambition and vowed to support any candidate the party nominates.
Mike Johnson widely enjoyed the support of the Republicans because he was claimed to have a good record of ability to tackle what the Majority Leader, Steve Scalise called “President Biden’s radical agenda.”
The emergence of Mike Johnson could not be separated from a “strong suggestion” from Mr. Donald Trump which pointed to Johnson.
“My strong SUGGESTION is to go with the leading candidate, Mike Johnson, & GET IT DONE, FAST!” Mr. Trump wrote on his social media platform, TRUTH.
Rep Aguilar Nominates Jeffries for Democrats
The election which was keenly contested also had Rep Pete Aguilar of California who is the Chairman of the Democratic caucus, nominating Hakeem Jeffries as the Democrat’s nominee for the 118th Speakership position of the House of Rep.
Rep. Aguilar had suggested that the speakership election is being taken by the Republicans as a way to find who can “appease Donald Trump” and oppose marriage equality, cutting social security and Medicare, and enacting nationwide restrictions on abortion as being embarked on by President Joe Biden.

Rep. Mike Johnson later won the vote started after 1 p.m., in the first round after earning the votes of the 220 Republicans present at the session while all the 209 Democrats also gave their votes to Rep. Jeffries. Mike Johnson was the first candidate since McCarthy’s exit to face no opposition from his party.
McHenry, the Interim Speaker of the House, announcing the vote results said “…Therefore, the Honorable Mike Johnson of the state of Louisiana, having received a majority of the votes cast, is duly elected speaker of the House of Representatives for the 118th Congress.”
Taking the oath of office, Rep Johnson restated “The challenge before us is great, but the time for action is now and I will not let you down.”
