No fewer than 200 houses and public schools as well as electric cables were on Sunday damaged by a windstorm which wreaked havoc in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital and Ogele/Eyenkorin in Asa Local Government Area of the state.

Round Table gathered that the devastating rainstorm which accompanied the rain on Sunday evening disrupted the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Ogele-Eyenkorin and neighbouring communities in Asa Local Government Area, leaving a trail of annihilation in its wake.

Residents of the area informed our correspondent that about 200 houses had their roofs blown off, while over 20 buildings collapsed, containing schools, shops, and business premises in the affected areas.

The vice Chairman of Ifelodun community in Eyenkorin, Zubairu Abiola, lamented the incident and summoned for intervention from the state government.

“The extinction is enormous. This has resulted in many residents becoming homeless suddenly. This will want much rehabilitation from the state government.”

He disclosed that many residents of the community and its adjourning areas were now homeless.

Zubairu appealed to the state governor, Mallam AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq to come to the rescue of the communities as always done by him.


The downpour, accompanied by strong winds, likewise brought down electricity poles and wires, plunging many areas into darkness while the drainage of the Kuntu bridge in the Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state was hindered by the debris gathered by the wind.

The worst-hit communities contained Eyenkorin, Ogele, Ifelodun, Ifesowapo, Orisunbare, Odo-Akuo, Apata Ajele, Alagbado Eyenkorin, Basa, Yakoyo, and Lekki. At least, 15 private schools, containing Community Secondary School, Apata Ajele, and Wilson School, Alagbado, likewise suffered spartan damage, with more or less classrooms collapsing while the windstorm furthermore blew off the roof of the Government Day Secondary School, and damaged the baseball facilities in Adeta in Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state.

Our correspondent visited the scene and observed that many affected residents were moving their belongings to squat with neighbours as they awaited intervention from authorities and well-meaning individuals.



Storm Kills Herder, 12 Cows in Kaduna



The Matuak Giwa community in the Bondon District, Moro’a Chiefdom, in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State has been thrown into mourning as a lightning strike, on Sunday, killed a herder and 12 cows, Round Table has learnt.

The Village Head of Matuak Giwa, Simon Ayuba, verified the incident on Monday, illuminating that the young herder was taking shelter from the rain alongside his cattle when the thunderstrike hit, killing them instantly.

“The herder, along with 12 cows, died on the spot. It was a tragic occurrence that has left the community in shock,” Ayuba said.

The Ardo of Bondon District, Mallam Tanko Isiyaka, likewise verified the incident, stating that the deceased herder hailed from Bauchi State.

Tanko expressed sadness over the incident and summoned for prayers and encouragement for the bereaved family.

The victim was laid to rest according to Islamic rites, leaving behind a family that will have to come to terms with the sudden and tragic loss of their loved one.

Our correspondent discloses that the incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable character of the weather and the importance of taking necessary precautions during storms.

It was gathered that the community is at all events reeling from the shock of the incident, and encouragement is pouring in for the bereaved family.
