Nyesom Wike The political atmosphere of Rivers State became highly tense yesterday after 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly announced their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While the political gladiators in the country were still digesting the development, there was a projection which was published by some Nigerian media outlets including PoliticsNigeria that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, would be likely defect to the APC very soon.
Considering the magnitude of the political sagacity of Nyesom Wike, The Round Table took into consideration the projection of some political heavyweights in the state who may defect from PDP to the APC in Rivers State alongside the former Governor of the State and current Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.
Local Government Chairmen and Councilors in Rivers State
There are 23 Local Government Areas in Rivers State and all of them were anointed by the political supremacy of Nyesom Wike. They have their respect and loyalty to Wike, and their issue remains the bedrock of the political crisis that currently hit the state.
Interestingly, Governor Wike has no reason to change any one of them from continuing in their respective Office as the state prepares for the 2024 Local Government Election in the state but Governor Siminalayi Fubara has the opinion of importing his boys though he did not discuss it with his political godfather, Nyesom Wike. Hence, the political crisis hitting the Rivers States initially started between Governor Fubara and the Local Government Chairmen who still have the support of Nyesom Wike.
Arguably, if the 23 Local Government Chairmen in Rivers State fail to defect from PDP to APC before D-Day when Nyesom Wike will dump the umbrella party, they will surely join him on D-Day.
The state also has 319 Councilors who were all anointed by Nyesom Wike, and their continuity faces no opposition from him. If not all of them, the majority of the 319 Ward Councilors will also dump the PDP for APC alongside their grassroots supporters before or on the day their political benefactor, Nyesom Wike, will be crossing the carpet of the political parties.
Head of Ministries, Department and Agencies in Rivers State
Interestingly, the Rivers State Executive Council headed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara was densely populated by the anointed loyalists of former Governor Wike.
Amazingly, the Rivers State Executive Council was almost unilaterally appointed by former Governor Wike ranging from the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo who also served, since May 2019, as the Secretary to the State Government under the administration of Nyesom Wike; the Chief of Staff, Hon. Chidi Amadi is unarguably Wike’s kinsman who was the former PDP Party Chairman in Obio/Akpor Local Government of the State where Nyesom Wike hails.
There are about 24 Commissioners and Special Advisers appointed under the administration of Governor Fubara, arguably, about 23 of them were anointed men and women of Wike except the only appointee from Governor Fubara’s Local Government Area, Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area.
The trend affects all the heads of other departments and agencies of the Rivers State Government, and if not all, the majority of them will definitely defect with Nyesom Wike to the APC, possibly, to retain their political relevance in the state.
Rivers Deputy Governor
The Rivers State Deputy Governor, Ngozi Nma Odu, may decide or not to defect from PDP to APC with her political benefactor, Nyesom Wike but she is projectably, the next favorite of Wike and she may become the next Governor of the State in a matter of weeks.
Ngozi Odu was not just picked by Nyesom Wike to deputize Fubara, she was the former Commissioner for Education in the State under the administration of Peter Odili; she was anointed to deputize Governor Fubara for a reason that will be unveiled soon in a premium publication.
