Starlink, SpaceX's burgeoning satellite internet service, experienced a significant global outage late Wednesday night, affecting tens of thousands of users across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The disruption, which lasted approximately two and a half hours, prompted apologies from Elon Musk and raised questions about the vulnerabilities of an increasingly relied-upon satellite-based internet infrastructure.
Users reported a sudden and widespread loss of connectivity, slow speeds, and unresponsive terminals beginning around 11:00 PM GMT (4:30 AM IST on Thursday, July 24, 2025). Outage tracking platforms like DownDetector saw a massive surge in reports, peaking at nearly 60,000 complaints. Major cities in the United States, alongside users in Canada, the UK, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, and the Philippines, were among those severely impacted.
Starlink confirmed the disruption on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating, "We are actively implementing a solution." Later, Michael Nicolls, Starlink's Vice President of Engineering, provided more details, attributing the outage to a "failure of key internal software services that operate the core network." Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, also took to X to apologize, assuring users that service would be restored shortly and that SpaceX would "remedy root cause to ensure it doesn't happen again."
According to statements from SpaceX engineers and internal sources, the root cause appears to be a critical misconfiguration introduced during a routine software update. This update, intended to improve inter-satellite communication performance, inadvertently disrupted how satellites relay data, leading to a cascading failure across the network.
While service has largely been restored, the incident has highlighted the growing dependence on satellite internet for various critical applications. In Ukraine, where Starlink has become a vital component of battlefield communications, the blackout reportedly disrupted frontline coordination. Internet analysis firms noted the outage as likely the longest and most sweeping disruption Starlink has experienced since becoming a major service provider. The incident also coincided with the recent launch of Starlink's Direct-to-Device (D2D) service in select markets, further underscoring the expanding role and increasing demands on the network.
