Hajj Pilgrims A Nigerian lawyer has condemned the Federal Government of Nigeria for Subsidizing the 2024 Hajj Pilgrimage of the Islamic practitioners in the country.
A source within the presidency including another anonymous source from the federal authority told The Daily Post, yesterday, that the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Hajj Commission will be Subsidizing the 2024 Hajj Pilgrimage with N90 billion.
It was also revealed that state governments have also been encouraged by the Federal Government of Nigeria to subsidize the cost of Hajj for each pilgrim from their respective states.
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was said to be considering about N500,000 per pilgrim palliative for all the pilgrims traveling to the Holy land of Mecca from Kano State.
Reacting to the development, a Nigerian lawyer, Barrister D. Y Kanna has turned red eyes at the government describing the Hajj palliative as a waste of resources.
The lawyer argued that Hajj is not compulsory for anyone who cannot afford it, hence it is meant for the wealthy ones and the Federal Government of Nigeria should not have spent public funds on their private journey.
He said, “The government should not subsidize Hajj fare or sponsor prayers in Saudi Arabia. Whoever has wealth, let him sponsor himself.
“Whoever can’t afford, Hajj, just like Zakat, is not mandatory for the poor.
Arguing further, Barrister Kanna said, “Why donate N500,000 to those who have raised millions while there are poor people who are hungry?”
