Joe Ajaero There have been a lot of reactions from Nigerians following the decision by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to embark on a nationwide strike following an alleged assault on the President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero in Imo State when he attempted to lead a protest against the governor of the state at the peak hour to the state’s governorship election.
Although some people find justification for the Industrial Action stating that an attack on the President of NLC, Ajaero, demands that the whole country is shut down to avert the reoccurrence of such act in the future. However, many citizens have faulted Ajaero for posing in politics using the NLC platform. They argued that Ajaero was passive, inactive, deafened, and dumbed when he was supposed to act as a proactive President of the workers’ union.
Interestingly, some people recalled that Ajaero failed to call for the country to be shut in search of justice for a Lagos factory worker who lost his hand with no compensation from the firm he works for; Also, Ajaero was said to have been [politically] satisfied when his kinsman and erstwhile Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, incessantly imposed monetary policy that costed lives of many Nigerians on the citizens. Ajaero was said to have lost his voice when many events that seemed to be in favor of his political party, the Labour Party, occurred but decided to ground the country just because he was dealt with by unknown thugs when he attempted to meddle into the politics of Imo State.
Taking a keen look at the scenario surrounding the recent call for the shutdown of the national economic activities in quest for justice for Ajaero’s alleged attack in Imo State, it would tally with a projection that if Ajaero fails to retrace his steps, his activities will further worsen the relationship between Igbo people of the South East and people from other parts of Nigeria.
Although some people in the opposition parties might be supporting Ajaero’s attempt to disrupt the country using personal ego to settle the failure of his kinsman, Mr. Peter Obi, at the 2023 presidential election, when the time ripe, he would be uncommissioned by the same men who are currently hailing him on his mission to ground the country.
Why Imo State and Election Weeks?
Sincerely, one would be worried about why Joe Ajaero chose to turn his attention to Imo State, a few days before the Governorship election in the state.
Whether you like it or not, there is nothing that occurs in a state a few months before the election that won’t receive political coloration, interpretation, and attention. The case of the statewide protest organized by Ajaero a few weeks before the State’s November 11 Governorship election was not different.
Ajaero hails from Imo State, so it won’t be enough excuse to claim he was not aware of the welfare of the state’s workers a year or more before the Governorship election entered the peak hour when he decided to organize a statewide protest to paint the state governor, Hope Uzodinma, with rejectable coloration.
Sincerely, any state Governor who would have allowed Joe Ajaero to successfully organize such a protest should not be pitied if he ended up losing the election, no matter the performance of the Governor in the state. We should not forget that Joe Ajaero was unrepentantly politically biased and has publicly shown his interest in the Labour Party, probably because his kinsman, Mr. Peter Obi was the presidential candidate of the party. With this, whatever Ajaero went to do in the name of any union at the wee-hours to the election deserved political reaction from the partie(s) who felt it was the target of his insubordination.
Supporting a political party in an election is a civic right of any citizen of a country but some institutions are not permitted to be used in favor of any political party in the election.
Considerably, some citizens argued that an attack on Joe Ajaero was an attack, not on his personality but on the office of the NLC President he occupies. Therefore, all NLC members deserve the government’s interest in the case. However, the same set of people have forgotten or failed to address the fact that Ajaero has also violated both the law and principle of founding the NLC, which prohibited the institution from being used for political purposes or anything otherwise than core-labour matters. They have forgotten to call for the government’s sanction on Ajaero’s violation of the union’s fundamental right and abusive use of the office he occupies.
Noticeably, Igbo people of the Southeastern part of Nigeria have shown unhidden rejection of the presidential mission of Bola Ahmed Tinubu since the electioneering campaign period, and have been unrepentant after Bola Tinubu won the election and was sworn in. The ethno-political campaign thrown by the Igbo people during the electioneering campaign in support of Mr. Peter Obi and the subsequent attitudes of the region towards policies of the administration of Bola Tinubu will be too hard to be separated from Ajaero’s action to truncate the country by all means, all in the name of the treatment he received from unknown thugs when he attempted to take his political mission to Imo State disguising as NLC President.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, despite being the number one citizen, and General Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has received the worst moral attacks mostly from Igbo people of the Southeast, and he has never considered them as a reason to ground the country or even the South East; Ajaero’s mission to ground the economic activities of the country following the failure of his political empire is more a palace coup which may further worsen the bilateral relationship between Igbo people and people from other parts of the country.
