Atiku Abubakar and Nyesom Wike The new crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could not be unlinked from the existing crisis between the "G5 Governos" consisting five aggrieved Governors elected under the platform of the party and the presidential candidate of the party in the February 25th general election, Atiku Abubakar.
The rift between the "G5 Governors" and the Atiku Abubakar's faction of the party centered at the demand by the former for the resignation of the National Chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu, who enjoys the support of the latter.
G5 Governors have resolved the North/South composition of the party's hierarchy must be balanced. Hence, the calls for the resignation of the National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, since Atiku Abubakar had emerged as the PDP presidential candidate, early 2022.
However, Atiku Abubakar's faction of the party frustrated the effort, and this led to the hostile suspension of Iyorchia Ayu m, a few weeks after Atiku Abubakar lost presidential election to Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Following the removal of Ayu, Umar Iliya Damagum, the National Deputy Chairman (North) of the party automatically became the Acting Chairman of the party, as laid down by the party's constitution.
Although since his take over, Damagum has been moving to reconcile the party but his emergence as PDP Acting National Chairman may not be the end of the fresh crisis.
A source disclosed that the G5 Governors are currently making consultation with members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, who are their loyalists, before the next step is activated.
The source stated that emergence of Damagum may not be the end of the crisis as the G5 Governors are currently planning to dissolve the NWC and set up a Caretaker Committee that will oversee the affairs of the party till 2025, when the tenure of the current NWC which started in 2021 would expire.
Since Atiku Abubakar, from North, was the presidential candidate of the party during the 2021/2025 season, the G5 Governors may be pushing for a Southerner-led Caretaker Committee, and Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, the current Deputy National Chairman (South) may be at sight.
In 2025, the party will do another Convention where the position of the National Chairman may be returned to the North, if there will be no fresh attempt to still give the presidential ticket of the party to the North.
