Barred Owl To protect other native species in the country’s game reserve, the government of the United States of America has tasked its hunters to shoot over 500,000 barred owls.
Barred owl which is also known as the Northern barred owl, striped owl or more fundamentally hoot owl is an invasive animal originating from North America and widely regarded as a member of the true owl. Hence it belongs to the genus Strix which is the origin of the family name under Linnaean taxonomy. Barred owls have been in the Pacific Northwest since the 1950s, and they currently outnumber the Northern spotted species of owls across California, Oregon, and Washington. This has been linked to the superiority of the Barred owls over the local species and other small animals in the region.
Due to the loss of their swamp habitat in recent decades due to the effect of global warming, barred owls have expanded their territory to the Northwestern part of America. It is a species of bird that doesn’t toy with the protection of its boundary.
Barred owls are larger and more terrestrial than the local owls, displacing and competing with the local species for food, and even destroying their nest and attacking them if the local special comes into their boundary.
Although a gentle creature with an engaging personality barred owls target small terrestrial animals and feed on them.
Due to the threats the barred owls pose to the existence of the native protected species, the U.S Fish and Wildlife (FWS) has finalized plans to engage hunters to shoot 500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand) of the barred owls over the next 30 years which is about 30 percent of the total population of barred owls in the region. The FWS believes this will relieve the pressure barred owls put on the local spotted owls in the region,
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife has now listed the barred owl as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, claiming that the barred owl has caused the local northern spotted owl population to decrease between 35% and 80% over the past 20 years.
Although there are debates on whether the program will be successful or not some citizens stood against the program claiming the highest priority should be placed on preventing extinction, and described the program as a “no-win” awful and incredibly sad mission measure. However, some Experts are confident that the program will successfully protect the spotted owls
