Interestingly, in the majority of the political contests, the political party that wins is not the strongest but a beneficiary of some influences that stood against other political parties in the contest. This political theory may come into play in the forthcoming 2025 Anambra State Governorship Election.
In this article, we will look at two politicians whose influence in the politics of Anambra State may work against the chances of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming Anambra State 2025 Governorship Election.
Mr. Peter Obi
This time ahead of the 2021 Governorship Election in Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi was fully a member of the PDP, and one of his political loyalists was the governorship candidate of PDP in the election. Despite this, the PDP lost the election and failed to challenge Prof. Charles Soludo’s victory in court because of the PDP’s wobbling performance at the poll.
Come to think of the combination of the facts that Mr. Peter Obi and the 2021 governorship candidate of PDP are no longer in the party as they have both defected to the Labour Party and the necessity that may warrant Mr. Peter Obi to ensure his Labour Party performs excellently in the 2025 election to prove his political relevance at the national level; it is surely a political bane for PDP in the state.
With the political foresight in the projection ahead of the 2027 general election in Nigeria, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is keenly interested in re-contesting the presidential seat of Nigeria under the platform of PDP, this is a blockade to any sense of projecting the possibility of Mr. Peter Obi’s return to PDP, and he will do everything to render PDP useless among his people of Anambra State.
Dr. Chris Ngige
By membership, Dr. Chris Ngige is a member of the APC, but he has allegedly refused to work for the party after winning the 2019 reelection for former President Muhammadu Buhari where he served as two-term minister. The expectation from Ngige ahead of the 2025 governorship election in Anambra State may not be different.
Chris Ngige, personally, had wanted to complete his second term tenure as Governor of the State but the rejection his ambition met is strict in APC. This has, presumably, made him wind up his mind from working for the party.
Besides, Ngige seemed to have aligned with the ethnic politics played by Mr. Peter Obi’s presidential campaign organizer during the last presidential election where Ngige was nowhere to be found during the campaign period for his party’s presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu who is now the President of Nigeria.
Another bitter truth about the politics of Ngige is that he may want to lobby for the governorship ticket of APC in Anambra State either for himself or one of his loyalists but he may hit the same endpoint as in the past. This may be a rock foundation for his likely anti-party project against APC Anambra during the forthcoming 2025 Governorship Election.
