Alhambra communal Clash Two persons have been killed in what looks like the beginning of a communal clash between members of two communities in Anambra State.
The incident which happened on Wednesday, November 22nd, 2023 was reported to have led to the death of two youths from the Nsugbe community in Anambra State who were alleged to have been killed by some youths of Nneyi Umueri community of the state who had come to resist Nsugbe from claiming ownership of some portions of land that were said to have been gazetted to Nsugbe community by the administration of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi in 2009.
Giving the names of the deceased as Chukwurah Nweze and Gozie Anyansi, a witness of the incident who happened to be a member of the Nsugbe Vigilante Group, Mr. Francis Okonkwo stated that the mobs from the Nneyi Umueri community were chanting “them no fear! Na our signboard them to remove.” He said he escaped death when he told the mob when he revealed his matrimonial relationship with the Nneyi Umueri community.
Mr. Okonkwo stated that the mob from the Nneyi Umueri community was armed to the teeth with matchets, daggers, and axes.
Speaking at a press conference in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, the leadership of the Nsugbe community called on the state government to launch an investigation into the matter, and ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.
The land in dispute was said to have been hijacked by the Nneyi Umueri community for the construction of a proposed base for the Nigeria Police Force. However, the same portions of land which encompasses portions 8, 9, 10, and 11 from the Ochapiliti Layout were said to have been gazette to the Nsugbe community by the Anambra State Government through the Anambra State Urban Development at Gazette No 4, Volume 19, dated August 13, 2009, on page B7, part B, ASLN number 2 under the administration of former Governor Peter Obi.
