In every democratically governed nation, Freedom of Movement, Freedom of Speech, and Freedom of Association are guaranteed, and these have been cited by many to invoke protests against government activities that seem to be against the interest of the public.
However, virtually across the world and irrespective of the system of governance, Freedom of Movement, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Association, or whatever Freedom you enjoy as a right be obsolete, revoked, and nullified once an individual or group enjoying the freedom tend to use it to violate public orderliness, and this is not unrelatable to any protest that turn violent.
Nigeria, in recent years, has witnessed two violent protests, one in 2020 and the other a few days ago where some citizens called for an end to bad governance in Nigeria but turned themselves into looters and destroyers of property belonging to the public and selected private individuals.
This seems to have informed the Nationality Assembly to work with the President of the country, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to Enact a law promulgating decisive punishment for any citizen or resident of Nigeria who embarks on violent protest, invasion, looting, destruction, or obstruction of public or private assets and accesses.

Some sections of the proposed legislation state that any person who engages in activities that foster mutual suspicion, mistrust, or intolerance, leading to conflict and violence that threatens Nigeria's corporate existence, peace, and security, commits an offense and is liable to a fine of N5 million, a 10-year prison term, or both.
A person who forcefully takes over any place of worship, town hall, school, premises, public or private place, arena, or a similar place through duress, undue influence, subterfuge, or other similar activities, commits an offense and is liable on conviction to a fine of N5 million or imprisonment for a term of 10 years or both.
Also in the proposed legislation, any individual who refuses to respect the sovereignty of Nigeria is liable to conviction or paying a fine. This legislation when passed into law may invoke jail term or an option of fine on anyone who hoist the flag of another nation in Nigeria to disrespect Nigerian independence or call for secession.

A person who professes loyalty, pledges or agrees to belong to an organization that disregards the sovereignty of Nigeria, commits an offense and is liable on conviction to a fine of N3 million or imprisonment for a term of four years or both.
Sections 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, and 20 of the bill stipulate that any individual, group, or organization involved in activities that undermine national security, disrupt community harmony, disturb peaceful coexistence, or impede law and order will be deemed to have committed an offense. Upon conviction, the penalty is a fine of N3 million, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
The bill further reads, A person, group or organization that persistently disregards, disobeys, or disrespects constituted authority, rules, regulations, order or contravenes the law wilfully, commits an offense and is liable on conviction to three years imprisonment at the first instance, and seven years for a subsequent offense or to a fine of N5 million or both.
