For the past few weeks, some citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have been expecting the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu to be announced as the National Security Adviser (NSA) to the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Today, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the appointment of eight Special Advisers among whom is Nuhu Ribadu who was appointed as Special Adviser on Security. This has left many people in disquiet as they had wanted Nuhu Ribadu as the National Security Adviser to the President.
Before knowing whether Nuhu Ribadu is the NSA or not, it is better to look into the responsibility of the NSA and what may differentiate it from the Special Adviser to the President on Security.
The National Security Adviser is a senior official in the cabinet of the President of Nigeria who manages national security on behalf of the President and serves as his chief advisor on all matters that are vital to the very survival of the state. The position is a statutory member of the Presidency, National Security Council, and Federal Executive Council.
The National Security Adviser is appointed by the President and does not require confirmation from the Nigerian Senate. This is the same feature that every Special Adviser to the President enjoys. It is also very important to note that in the history of Nigeria, there has never been a point in time when a President appoint a National Security Adviser and another Special Adviser on Security at the same time.
Going by this, it is settled that the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the appointment of Nuhu Ribadu as the Special have settled the variation in the opinions on whether Nuhu Ribadu has been appointed as NSA or not.
In this capacity, Nuhu Ribadu will serve as the National Security Adviser to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
