The Supreme Court of Nigeria has delivered judgment on the post-governorship election petition case in Lagos State.

The Supreme Court Justices led by Justice Garba Lawal on Friday affirmed the election of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as Governor of Lagos State.

The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Lagos State during the 2023 governorship election, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and his People's Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart, Abdulazeez Adediran, had challenged the victory of Babajide Sanwoolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in March 2023.

The LP urged the apex court to hold that the March 18 election was marred by irregularities and non-compliance with the Electoral Act, adding that Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat was not qualified to contest the election.

Similarly, Adediran filed 34 grounds of appeal, asking the apex court to upturn the verdict of the Lagos State Governorship Election Tribunal and the Court of Appeal.

But counsel to Sanwo-Olu, Nas Ogunsakin, informed the court that the applicants did not present evidence to support their claims and that the witnesses brought were incompetent.

Recall that the petitioners (PDP, LP, and their candidates) lost to Babajide Sanwoolu, and APC at the Tribunal, Appeal Court, and Supreme Court.

In the meantime, stakeholders in the political spaces of Kano, Zamfara, and about five other states are currently uncertain as the Supreme Court is delivering judgment over the governorship election that took place in their respective states.
