Kwankwaso, Obi, Atiku and Tinubu Photo Credit: The Sun Nigerians are warming up for the seventh presidential election that would be conducted in the country since the return of democracy in 1999. Although 18 presidential candidates are vying to take over the mantle of power from the outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari, only four of them are considered to be top-notch and the real men in the contest.
The four leading presidential candidates are Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP).
The four foremost presidential candidates have their separate sets of opportunities which may position them as a favourable candidate in the February 25th poll, but there are one or more political threats which may hinder their chances of capitalizing on their opportunities, come February 25th, 2023.
In this article, we will look at some of the major threats that may hinder the chances of each of the four major presidential candidates in turn.
1) Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso's major threats are two and these may definitely cast him out of any projection that sincere forecasts whom will become the next president of Nigeria.
First, the political structure of Kwankwaso is not widely distributed across Nigeria. So, security of his votes across the country could be considered not guaranteed.
Also, Kwankwaso has very narrow chance of achieving 25% votes in at least 24 of the 36 States in Nigeria, regardless of the number of votes he may gather from his base. This is his denial to the office of the President, inasmuch as the 2023 election is concerned.
2) Peter Obi
Peter Obi's major threat to becoming the President of Nigeria is the fact that his voting strength is uneven and he will find it, extremely impossible to satisfy the required 25% votes in at least 24 states in Nigeria.
His patronage of the churches and the unfavourable inter-ethnic connection between his ethnic group and others in Nigeria may block his way to the seat of the President.
3) Atiku Abubakar
The major threat against Atiku Abubakar lies in the difficulty to garner majority votes ahead of other presidential candidates from about 27 strategic states in Nigeria.
4) Bola Ahmed Tinubu
The calming fuel scarcity, yet-to-be-resolved naira policy, anti-democratic moves by the cabals, the possibility of not holding an election, alleged planning of a coup and perceived youth insurrection are the major threats that can stop Tinubu from becoming president of Nigeria.
