Photo Credit: Facebook A few days before the presidential election in Nigeria, the Labour Party constituted and released members of the party who will manage situations of the election, across the 36 states of the federation, at the National level.
The constitution of the situation room team was expected to follow the Principle of the Federal Character because such a team is considered to be a representation of how the party would treat the citizens and obey key factors of the Federal character eventually, it has the opportunity to produce the next President of Nigeria.
First and foremost, ethnic groups in each state are predominantly respected in the composition of such teams, to bring a balance to the ethical statistics of the national team. In the course of the composition of the team, even the distribution of ethical content of the situation room teams fails, woefully. There was biased favouritism towards an ethnic group, mostly where only three names of the southwesterner-members of the team are the predominant Yorubas from the geopolitical zone with six states.
Likewise, there is little to no presence of the Hausa and Fulani northerners on the list. These are ethnic groups with not less than twelve out of the 36 States in Nigeria.
Besides this, there was a religious imbalance in the list. Most regrettably, only one of the 36-member team is assumed to be a Muslim.
Even, In the northern part of the country where people are predominantly Muslims, people of other faith were found worthy to represent the environment.
These observations are not meant to incite anyone against the other but an awareness post to sensitive the brains behind the composition of the list to view the list as one that portrays the ethics that may be considered as the position of the party if eventually, the party is allowed to govern the nation.
Also, this may negatively present the presidential candidate of the party as a presidential candidate of one ethnic group or a presidential candidate of one religion.
These are challenges that may threaten the opportunity of the Labour Party to perform excellently at the national elections.
