Kano Residents Beg FG as Collapsed Kunnawa Dam Makes Youths Jobless
Kunnawa Dam first constructed in 1967
Residents of the Kunnawa community in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State have appealed to the Federal Government of Nigeria under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to come to their aid as the only Kunnawa Dam which gives life to the residents of the community have broken down.

Kunnawa Dam was said to have been constructed by local people in 1967 to boost their drives for agricultural activities, however, the dam has long broken down, causing youths from the community to massively move to the cities in search of greener pastures.

Our correspondent, Jabiru Hassan, who visited the community gathered that Kunnawa Dam received slight attention in 2018 when it was repaired by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development under the on-farm Water Harvest Structure by the Department of Climates Change. However, the repaired portion of the dam broke down again and the agrarian community begged for the expansion of the dam.

Our correspondent further discovered that the Kunnawa Dam was the major source of energy driving the agricultural activities of thousands of people residing in many communities, including Kunnawa, Waddau, Gudau Dungurawa, Dan Amar, and Dorowar Shehu communities in Kano State.

When the Kunnawa dam was active, communities along the dam served as major producers and suppliers of staple food like tomatoes, onions, peppers, lettuces, rice, maize, and watermelon to the Nigerian market.

Our correspondent, who was able to have interactive sessions with farmers, herders, and community leaders along the Kunnawa Dam, reported that all leaders canvassed support for the urgent repair of Kunnawa Dam to reduce the migrations from rural areas into the cities in search of white collar jobs by the energetic youths.

Malam Yahaya Aliyu, the village head of Kunnawa told the Round Table that "Kunnawa Dam was first constructed in 1967, manually, by the people of the host communities using local equipment. It serves as a place for dry season farming, fishery, livestock consumption, and weekend games but the place is now dry since it breaks in 2018".

He called on the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to come to the aid of the Dam because it serves as an arena of economic development and employment opportunity and this promotes peace and unity across the host communities.

Malam Ya'u Sarkin Fulani who is also the Ward Head of Waddau disclosed that repairing Kunnawa Dam would boost dry season farming in the area where he assured that the place is economically stable for farmers and herders because there are herdsmen stationed in the area living with the farmers, for over 20 years, peacefully.

Commenting on the need for rehabilitation of the dam, the Farmer's Representative, Suleiman Umar, and Ardo Alhaji Geza, the Head of Herdsmen in the area, expressed their hopes that the present administration would come to their aid regarding the Dam to boost irrigation programmes and reduce unemployment among the residents who predominantly farmers and herders.
