Italian Journalists on Strike Over Government's Suffocating Control

Italian Journalists on Strike Over Government
Giorgia Meloni

Journalists working for Italy's broadcaster, RAI, have proceeded on industrial action protesting high-handedness by the government of Giorgia Meloni.

Journalists at Italy’s state broadcaster RAI went on strike today protesting what their union termed “suffocating control” by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration, which it claimed was “attempting to turn RAI into a mouthpiece for the government.”

According to some broadcasters, "We strike to defend the autonomy and independence of the public radio and television service from the pervasive control of information spaces by politicians.”

It has been a tradition for the Italian government to appoint loyalists to top job positions at the RAI but since Meloni's administration in 2022, experienced journalists have been quitting their jobs.

Journalism has been a common enemy or rather, threat to government at all levels across the world.

From Saudi Arabia to Israel to America; Nigeria to the United Kingdom; United States of America to Germany, there have been reports of suffocating control by the government over journalists in their localities.
