A few weeks back, my Google Analytics stopped working properly, I felt it was a mere service disruption from Google's end but as days count, I switched the ways I handled it, and launched a deep research into what might have gone wrong.
After spending much time, attempting to reawake the service I ended up with what I called the best solution.
What happened is that Google had stopped processing traffic data related to the defunct Universal Analytics tags, it has now switched to the Google Analytics 4 tags with GA4 tag codes.
It is great to first understand what is the difference between Universal Analytics (UA/GA3) and Google Analytics 4 (GA4).
Universal Analytics (UA/GA3) – used a session-based model for measuring data. This focused mostly on sessions and pageviews. GA4/New Analytics – uses an event-based model for measuring data, which is based on events and event parameters.
Then, I discovered that Google has provided a means to migrate your Universal Analytics to the new Google Analytics 4. However, when I tried it, it was not rather working perfectly because no new tag related to Google Analytics 4 is tied to the migrated Universal Analytics account.
What I did to correct this after many attempts to get the Universal Analytics tag back to work but failed was that I created a new property under the same account, and new GA4 tags were issues which I immediately deployed to the server and, about a few hours later, the GA4 tags started sending my traffic reports.
