In a surprising turn of events, Iñigo Martínez is reportedly set to leave FC Barcelona and join Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr on a free transfer. The move, which has been widely reported by reliable journalists, will see the 34-year-old defender terminate his contract with Barcelona immediately.

According to reports, the transfer is made possible by a pre-existing "gentleman's agreement" between Martínez and Barcelona. Last season, Martínez received a tempting offer from the Saudi Pro League but chose to stay with Barcelona after being convinced by coach Hansi Flick's project. However, an agreement was reportedly reached that if a similar offer were to arrive this summer, the club would not stand in his way. It appears Barcelona is now honoring that word.

While the move comes as a surprise, it has been suggested that it benefits Barcelona financially. The club will not receive a transfer fee for the player, but his departure is expected to free up a significant amount of money in terms of salary cap and Financial Fair Play margins. This could assist Barcelona in registering new signings.

Martínez, who joined Barcelona in 2023, had a successful 2024-25 season under Hansi Flick. He made 46 appearances across all competitions, scored his first goal for the club, and won three titles, including the La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup. His departure is seen by some as a blow to the team, as he was considered a reliable and important defender.

The defender will now join a star-studded Al-Nassr side that includes players like Cristiano Ronaldo. He is reportedly set to sign a contract until June 2026, with an option to extend for an additional season. Martínez, who recently missed preseason matches due to muscle fatigue, is said to have found the financial offer from Al-Nassr difficult to resist.
