The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), an agency of the Federal Government, has issued a fresh flood alert, warning of potential heavy flooding across 32 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the coming days. The alert, which was released today, August 7, 2025, warns of high to very high flood risks for a 15-day period, from August 7 to August 21.

According to the Director General of NIHSA, Mr. Umar Ibrahim, the warning follows a period of rising river levels and persistent rainfall across the country. The agency's alert categorizes flood risks into very high, high, and moderate, based on local topography and projected rainfall intensity.

Affected States and Communities

A total of 198 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 832 communities are said to be at risk of varying degrees of flooding. The states with a "very high" risk of flooding include Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Delta, Gombe, Kebbi, Kogi, Lagos, Niger,   Ogun, Rivers, Yobe, and Zamfara states.

States categorized as facing "high to moderate" risk include Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Ebonyi, Edo, FCT, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kwara, Nasarawa, Ondo, Plateau, Sokoto, and Taraba.

The alert also warns of the potential disruption of over 100 major transportation routes, particularly in flood-prone areas, and a high likelihood of displacement for residents in low-lying areas.

Call for Action and Precautionary Measures

In light of this development, NIHSA has urged residents in the affected regions to remain vigilant, adhere to early warning directives, and cooperate with emergency response agencies. State governments and local authorities are also called upon to take proactive measures to mitigate risks and ensure community safety.

This latest alert comes against a backdrop of a recent spate of devastating floods that have already claimed lives and displaced thousands of people across the country this year. According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), floods have so far this year affected over 134,000 people, with 191 lives lost and over 48,000 people displaced.

The Federal Government has emphasized its commitment to providing support to affected communities and has advised citizens to follow weekly forecasts and flood updates from official sources like the NIHSA website and social media platforms.
