In a moment of immense pride and celebration, the Delta State Government has honored its victorious debate team, who brought home the trophy from the 2025 World Basic Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, on Thursday, rewarded each of the five-man contingent with a substantial cash prize of ₦20 million at a reception held at the Government House in Asaba.

The coaches and handlers of the team also received the same amount, acknowledging their crucial role in the historic victory.

The five students, who represented Nigeria after winning the national championship, were celebrated for their exceptional intellectual depth, eloquence, and critical thinking. Their win against top contenders, including teams from the United States and the host nation, Qatar, is being hailed as a testament to the quality of education in Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.

The team members are Wisdom Chukwuma of Government College, Ughelli; Otorvo Uyoyou of Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun;  Abraham Honour of Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka; Ikhamateh Splendour of Government Model Secondary School, Asaba, and Alika Daniel of Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale.

Governor Oborevwori described their triumph as a significant milestone and a clear affirmation of his administration's commitment to educational excellence. He highlighted that the state is not only known for its natural resources and talent in entertainment and sports but also for its brilliance in academics. The governor expressed his belief that this generous reward would serve as a great encouragement for other youths to be diligent and excel in their studies.

The champions, who debated critical global issues such as climate change and youth empowerment, attributed their success to "the spirit of Delta" and the courage to represent every basic school student in the state.

The event concluded with resounding applause, celebrating not just a trophy but a renewed hope in the power of education to shape the future.
