Wembley Stadium witnessed a dramatic start to the new English football season as FA Cup winners Crystal Palace defeated Premier League champions Liverpool in a thrilling FA Community Shield match. After a captivating 2-2 draw, the Eagles secured a historic 3-2 victory on penalties, claiming their first-ever Community Shield.

The match, which served as a curtain-raiser for the 2025/26 season, saw both teams trade blows in a high-octane affair. Liverpool, under new manager Arne Slot, got off to a blistering start with new signing Hugo Ekitike finding the net just four minutes in. However, Palace, showing the resilience that led them to FA Cup glory, equalized shortly after through a Jean-Philippe Mateta penalty.

Liverpool regained the lead through another debutant, Jeremie Frimpong, but the Eagles refused to be beaten. With just 13 minutes remaining, Ismaila Sarr leveled the score once more, sending the match directly to a penalty shootout.

The shootout proved to be a tense affair, with Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson emerging as the hero. Henderson made crucial saves from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, while Mohamed Salah missed his spot-kick. The decisive moment came when substitute Justin Devenny coolly dispatched his penalty, securing a famous victory for Oliver Glasner's side.

This victory marks a significant achievement for Crystal Palace, adding to their FA Cup triumph and demonstrating their potential to compete with the top teams in the Premier League. For Liverpool, the result highlights both the promise of their new signings and some potential defensive vulnerabilities that will need to be addressed as they prepare for the new season.
