Nyesom Wike The former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has begged members of the National Assembly to approve the FCT's budget for the 2024 Appropriation year.
Wike pleaded with the National Assembly members today when he was appearing before the house to defend the N17.1 Billion 2024 Appropriation Bill of the FCT.
Wike stated to the Federal Lawmakers while defending his budget, "The money is just N17.1 Billion, so what can I say other than to say, please help us pass it.”
While giving the breakdown of the N17.1 billion budget, Nyesom Wike said N5 billion is allocated as counterpart funding for the Greater Abuja Water Supply project and N4 billion was allocated for the completion of the Vice President’s residence, while N609.7 million will be spent on the settlement of residential and office accommodation for international organizations in the FCT.
N4.5 billion for the design and construction of the Nigeria Cultural Centre and Millennium Tower while N3 billion was also allocated for the rehabilitation of the federal secretariat.
Wike, however, informed the House Committee "Of the N15.5 billion appropriated for infrastructural development in the 2023 budget, only N8 billion was released, representing 52 percent.
Responding to Wike, the Chairman of, the Senate Committee on the FCT, Ibrahim Bomai, agreed the money released to the ministry in 2023 would not be enough to complete the projects going on in the Federal Capital city.
Bomai, therefore, appealed to the members to give no objection considering the meager amount. After which Wike took a bow and went.
