Killer Mike, one of the award winners at the 2024 edition of the Grammy Awards was arrested yesterday by the cops after having a great night at the ceremony. Mike went home with three awards, yesternight.
Mike's song, “Scientists & Engineers” won the "Best Rap Performance" and "Best Rap Song" awards while his album “Michael” won "Best Rap Album".
He was, however, arrested after he was accused of having an altercation with the security operatives at the venue, a few minutes after he bagged three awards at the Grammy.
Mike who celebrated his sweep with an emotional acceptance speech, said: “You can’t tell me that you get too old, you can’t tell me it’s too late…dreams do come true.”
Still unclear but the Hollywood Reporter, later in the evening, shared a video of the rapper handcuffed and being escorted out of the award ceremony by police (the event was held in the Crypto.com arena).
The Los Angeles Police Department said the 48-year-old rapper, whose real name is Michael Render, was detained and handcuffed “for a physical altercation” at the venue.
The rapper was booked for misdemeanor battery before being released by police, the LAPD added.
Mike did not comment publicly on the incident or the arrest but reportedly spoke to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and posted on his X account early Monday: “The South Said Something! Amen”.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said it texted the rapper about the arrest, to which he responded: “Overzealous security, but I am good…I’m good! Three Grammys are good!”
Under the California penal code, a person convicted of misdemeanor battery could face up to a $2,000 fine, up to six months in prison, or both, Forbes stated.
Citing unnamed law enforcement officials, TMZ reported that Mike was accused of “knocking down a security officer after they did not get out of his way quick enough.” A video of the purported incident shared by TMZ appears to show Mike in a heated conversation outside the venue with a person who appears to be a security guard but no physical altercation.
