Atiku Abubakar, Photo Credit: The Cable In a news published by the Cable, it was reported that an insurgent group, Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) has released a statement alleging that there is a plan to assassinate the presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, in the Southeast geopolitical zone.
According to the Media and Publicity Secretary of the insurgent group, Emma Powerful, the allegedly planned attack and assassination of Atiku Abubakar was aimed to blackmail the (IPOB), its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and supporters of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, who hails from the southeast geopolitical zone.
Considerably, IPOB has been known for causing socio-unrest in the Eastern part of Nigeria with the record of being responsible for the kidnapping, harassment, intimidation and death of many citizens including a northern politician, Ahmed Gulak, in Imo State when he visited the state on a working visit for his party, PDP.
Technically digesting the statement issued by the IPOB, one may begin to wonder about the relationship between Atiku Abubakar and the insurgent group, which would have necessitated the group conducting intelligence research on the visitation of Atiku to the region, whereas other presidential candidates have visited the region without IPOB conducting such a kind of research to ascertain the degree of their safety in the region, during their visits?
Likewise, carefully looking at how some people in the eastern region identified Atiku as someone who blocked the chances of their man, Peter Obi from picking the PDP presidential ticket, os it not logical to see this statement by IPOB as anticipated damage control on possibly, a proposed evil act?
Atiku has visited other regions in the country and had not received such a threat alert to his life before his visit. What is making the Southeast region to be different?
