The Inspector General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun has stated that the relevance of police checkpoints on Nigerian highways is indispensable despite complaints from the citizens that the police officers use the checkpoints to frustrate the road users.
IGP Egbetokun stated this while responding to complaints by the citizens that Nigerian Police Officers use the checkpoints mounted on the highways to obstruct the free flow of traffic, exploit the citizens and cause general inconvenience to the road users.
The Inspector General of Police has therefore resolved to deploy a special police team that will keep monitoring the activities of the police officers deployed to the highways for proper conduct.
"Recognizing the importance of safe and efficient road networks, the IGP has ordered the deployment of the improved Monitoring Unit and X-Squad operatives, in collaboration with supervisory senior officers, to conduct thorough assessments of key checkpoints along our highways," Police Headquarters Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi stated.
The IGP Egbetokun however, urge members of the public to always cooperate with the police and other security agents on operations and to share their feedback, experiences, and suggestions with the police, while also expressing the resoluteness of the Force in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of every individual traversing our highways. The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to restoring sanity, maintaining order, and fostering a sense of trust between law enforcement and the communities we serve.
