Bola Ahmed Tinubu President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has ordered the immediate release of 42,000 metric tons of grains from both the Reserve and Rice Millers Association of Nigeria to circulation. The order was given to address the food shortage in the country, in the meantime.
The news about the directive was revealed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, after a meeting of the special presidential committee on emergency food intervention on Thursday, February 8th, 2024.
Hon. Idris, however, stated that the Federal Government of Nigeria will not hesitate to punish food hoarders as he unveiled the government's plan to import any shortage that the decision may cause either the reserve or the millers association.
This decision might have been influenced by the recent protests which rocked Minna, the capital city of Niger State; Lokoja, the capital city of Kogi State and some areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Women started the protest in Minna but were later joined by the men to frustrate the traffic flow in the state capital while expressing the agony the citizens were going through because of the economic hardships facing the country.
Also, traders in Lokoja shut their shops as they complained about low patronage and the inability of the citizens to meet their end means.
The economic hardships facing Nigeria have been linked to the removal of oil subsidies, and the floatation of the naira against the dollar which has resulted in the free fall of the naira against the dollar.
