Bola Ahmed Tinubu President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Nigerian Customs Service to return all the seized food items to their owners.
The directive allegedly came from the President intending to ease the economic hardships hitting the country.
Recall that the the recent economic hardships facing Nigerians have increased the prices of food items and other essential commodities making it extremely difficult for the residents to survive.
During a recent program embarked on by the Nigeria Customs Service selling seized food items at give-away prices to the indigent residents of Nigeria, residents vehemently lamented the operation of the Customs with the calls on the government to order Customs to rather stop seizing food items from the smugglers.
Illegal exportation of Nigerian food products to neighboring countries to sabotage the country's economy was identified as a major cause of the recent inflation biting Nigerians.
However, it is not known whether the presidential order will also affect traders whose food items were seized by the Customs while attempting to smuggle food items out of the country to sabotage the economy.
Recall that "The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Eastern Marine Command (EMC), recently seized three truckloads of yam tubers and other assorted items loaded onto a boat, intended for illegal exportation through the waterways of Isaka in Oron to neighboring countries, such as Cameroon.
Also, the Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone 'A,' announced on 8 March 2024, that it uncovered an ingenious concealment of foreign parboiled rice in petroleum jerry cans along Ajilete in Ogun state
In the operation which occurred in the Southwestern part of Nigeria, 3,779 50kg bags of suspected foreign rice, equivalent to over seven trailer loads worth over N365m were seized from various parts of the region.
With the directive given by President Bola Tinubu, the majority of Nigerians believe the food scarcity will soon be relieved if the directive is obeyed by the customs officers as it will enable the importation of food items to the country from the neighboring countries.
