Bola Ahmed Tinubu (R) and Senator Abdulazeez Yari (L) The State Security Service (SSS) has allegedly arrested Senator Abdulazeez Yari former Zamfara State Governor and member of the 10th National Assembly who recently contested for the seat of the Senate President of the House of Senate.
Gazette Claimed that its source revealed that Senator Yari was arrested by the SSS because he refused to pick President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's calls during the contest for the Senate Presidential seat of the 10th Assembly.
Sources said "Mr Yari received a call from Yusuf Bichi, the director-general, to report at the SSS’ headquarters for an urgent discussion. Upon arrival, Mr Yari was asked to wait for Mr Bichi, who purportedly stepped out. But the senator was delayed throughout the day by a phalanx of armed SSS agents, only to be told at about 10:00 p.m. Thursday that he won’t be going home, The Gazette learnt. The senator’s planned visit with other Senate colleagues to former President Ibrahim Babangida on Friday was consequently aborted," Gazette claims.
On being interrogated by the SSS officials, Senator Yari was said to have been asked why he ignored The President's phone calls.
“He was asked why he ignored the president’s phone calls during the Senate leadership battle,” an official said.
Senator Yari was quoted to have said “He started arguing that he has every right to contest for the position and decisions about his political career moves should not come from the president.
“The president was trying to appeal to him to stand down his ambition to make sure any fate similar to how Bukola Saraki became Senate President in 2015 won’t be repeated. We all knew that Saraki’s emergence back then was the first error President Buhari made, and it crippled his first four years in office,” the official said.
However, the SSS has not released any official statement to this effect, and the news may not be completely true because Senator Yari seems to be nurturing an antagonist political ideology in the progressive realm of politics.
Recall that Senator Yari, before the 2023 election met with Senator Bukola Saraki few days after former Governor Bello Matawalle dumped Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for All Progressives Congress (APC). He was rumoured in a defection news from APC to PDP but later stayed back. After this meeting, Governor Yari has been in close political romance with the PDP leadership so much that it lost his state to PDP in the last governorship election.
