The Federal Government of Nigeria has been able to get the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to sheathe their industrial sword regarding the proposed industrial action due to the removal of oil subsidy.

NLC and TUC were previously considering whether to embark on an industrial action to force the government of the Federation to revert its decision on the removal of the oil subsidy.

In a powerful meeting between representatives of the Federal Government led by the outgoing Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon (rt) Femi Gbajabiamila and the labour leaders with the President of the NLC, Comrade Joseph Ajaero representing Nigeria Labour Congress and the President of Trade Union Congress, Comrade Engr. Festus Osifo leading the TUC delegates to the meeting.

At the end of the dialogue, seven conditions were set for the Federal Government of Nigeria by the NLC and TUC representatives, and the proposed industrial action was suspended.

According to the resolution reached after the engagement, the NLC, the TUC and the Federal Government of Nigeria, the following conditions are to be satisfied:

1. The Federal Government, the TUC and the NLC to establish a joint committee to review the proposal for any wage increase or award and establish a framework and timeline for implementation.

2. The Federal Government, the TUC and the NLC to review World Bank Financed Cash Transfer scheme and propose inclusion of low-income earners in the program.

3. The Federal Government, the TUC and the NLC to revive the CNG conversion program earlier agreed with labour centers in 2021 and work out detailed implementation and timing.

4. The labour centers and the Federal Government to review issues hindering effective delivery in the education sector and propose solutions for implementation.

5. The labour centers and the Federal Government to review and establish the framework for completion of the rehabilitation nation's refineries.

6. The Federal Government to provide a framework for the maintenance of roads and expansion of rail networks across the country.

7. All other demands submitted by the TUC to the Federal Government will be assessed by the joint committee.

To enable further negotiation, the NLC has therefore been encouraged to suspend its proposed industrial action while the engagement between the Federal Government and the workers' unions continued. The NLC, TUC and the Federal Government of Nigeria have, therefore, agreed to meet on June 19, 2023 to agree on implementation framework.

Others at the meeting are the former Executive Governor of Edo State and Senator-elect, Adams Oshiomole; former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo; Secretary General of the TUC, Comrade Nuhu Toro and the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ms. Kachollom S.
