George Kelly Rivers State Commissioner for Works, George Kelly, has resigned from his appointment in the state after getting a fresh appointment from the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government of Nigeria.
Yesterday, the appointment of George Kelly as the Director General of the Border Communities Development Agency was approved by President Tinubu.
The Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA) is a development agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria with the mandate to ensure the sustainable social, economic, and infrastructural development of border communities in Nigeria.
The Agency shall, among other things,
(I) Prepare a comprehensive program of action for the development of the border communities;
(II) prepare and submit proposals on projects for the Border Communities to the President;
(III) advise the Federal Government on border area development and other related issues;
(IV) consult with the relevant border communities and liaise with the Federal Government on areas required for the overall development in order to maintain, sustain, and develop border communities;
(V) identify and determine in each year, such deliberate or conscious infrastructural project required for the overall development of the border communities;
(VI) execute such border development policies, projects, and programs in the border communities.
Nigeria has 86 official land borders and this agency has the responsibility of overseeing sustainability, development, and growth of communities around these borders.
The appointment of George Kelly as Director General of Border Communities Development Agency by President Tinubu is understood by The Round Table to be a means of allowing Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State to get his preferred man to the position of the state Commissioner for Works recalling that the elevated commissioner for works is a protege of Fubara's erstwhile political godfather, Nyesom Wike.
The Round Table understands that the development might be part of President Tinubu's intervention to totally restore peace and normalcy to the political environment of Rivers State.
