The much-talked-about 2023 presidential election has been contested and won, the rest is history. In history, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has left a remarkable path in the record of the political files of Nigeria, as much as the said 2023 election is concerned.
Although Peter Obi capitalised his voting strength on both religious and ethnic influence, he deserves commendation and encomium for frustrating the level of accountability of two political perceptions.
First, there was a political perception that an established political structure is needed for any politician to contest an election to put up a fight with the other parties. This has been put to test by the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and the perception remains frustrating if we are to go by the result of the presidential election where the first and second runners have neck-to-neck performances.
Peter Obi has diversified the belief in the perception with the option that an impromptu political structure could be set up to man an election. A few numbers of politicians may only be needed to guide them toward challenging the established political structure.
Also, Peter Obi has been able to review the perception that it would be impossible for a Southeast person to become president of Nigeria. Now, the Igbo people may need to work on what could have been his shortcoming for failing to secure the majority votes in the election.
With his great performance which led to locking down the East, South and gathering some votes from outside his geopolitical zone, Peter Obj might have raised the hope of many people that one day, Igbo man will become President of Nigeria.
