Mr. Peter Obi Yesterday, the Nigeria social media spaces became busy, with the majority talking with diversity in their opinion regarding the tax liability profile of the Nollywood filmmaker, Iyabo Ojo.
The Lagos State Government Internal Revenue Service had summoned actress Iyabo Ojo to remit a total sum of N18.6 million in tax liability she owed to the state as personal income tax. Although the filmmaker in a trending video claimed she was not owing the state.
Unfortunately, many citizens misunderstood the demand for Iyabo Ojo's income tax liability to be cleared as a 'political witch-hunt' from the state government because she supported Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party during the presidential election.
Again, it has been defined in a previous story that Personal Income Tax is a direct tax charged on the income of a person. In this context, a person means Individuals, Corporate sole or body of individuals, Communities, Families, and Trustees or Executors of any settlement.
The question that is posed by the understanding of some Nigerians reacting to the tax notice which sounds like the notice was related to a 'political witch-hunt' could easily be answered by flashing back at what happened to Mr. Peter Obi in 2016.
In 2016, Mr. Peter Obi was not contesting for any political office and he was even a member of the then-ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, his company was sealed for the same tax liability.
Remarkably, in August 2016, the Federal Inland Revenue Services, FIRS, reportedly sealed the Onitsha warehouse of Next International company, owned by former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, citing tax violations.
If the PDP-led Federal Government could seal Peter Obi’s company which reportedly owed N20.4million in tax remittances since 2006 having failed to pay Company Income Tax, Withholding Tax, and Education Tax within the period, how will anyone justify the speculation that Iyabo Ojo's case is a 'political witch-hunt'?
