Zakir Naik and Sultan of Sokoto Zakir Naik, a popular Islamic cleric who is on the wanted list of the Indian anti-terrorism agency was recently invited to Nigeria by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar. The visit has generated mixed reactions as Nigerians condemned the invitation. He came to Nigeria, unperturbed on October 30, 2023.
Zakir Naik is scheduled to hold Islamic sermon sections in three Northern cities including, Sokoto in Sokoto State, Ilorin in Kwara State, and Abuja, Federal Capital Territory. He will be spending four days in Nigeria.
Zakir Naik, 57, got into the limelight of being wanted by the Indian Anti-Terrorism when in 2006, a terrorist killed 22 people in Dhaka and referenced Zakir Naik as his influencer whose Islamic Preach encouraged him to carry out the illicit act. He was also accused of money laundering to the tune of $28 million to buy an apartment in Pine and Mumbai using a third-party name.
In 2019, Zakir Naik was also banned from taking part in public discussion or lecture following his frequent condemnation of Malaysians in India and northern descent. Zakir was seeking asylum in Malaysia when this occurred after India declared him wanted.
Photos emerged online confirming the presence of Zakir Naik in the country where took pictures with the Emir of Soko, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar; Nigerian Immigration officers, and officers of the Nigerian Air Force.
However, Zakir Naik denied all the allegations leveled against him by the India Anti-Terrorism agency
Reacting to Zakir’s presence in Nigeria, many citizens argued that it is delicate for a country where religious issues are sensitive and already dealing with an Islamic sect, Boko Haram, to be playing host to Zakir Naik as his presence in the country may endanger Nigeria’s security situation.
