I worked with National Assembly who Demanded Bribe for their Official Duties, Says Obasanjo

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, culled from BBC
Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, has denied the allegation that he introduced corruption to the country's National Assembly when he was the President of the country. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo stated that he rather worked with the National Assembly that demanded bribes from him before delivering their civic duty.

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who was featured on the Hard Talk, a British Broadcasting Corporation's (BBC) socio-political programme, was faced with a question from the anchor of the television interview on an allegation that he induced members of the Nigeria National Assembly with financial bribes to have his ways during his administration as the country's president.

Debunking the allegation, Chief Obasanjo disclosed that the claim is total rubbish. He insisted that he worked with a corrupt National Assembly.

Chief Obasanjo said that the first message he received from the National Assembly when he was inaugurated in 1999 was corruption-oriented.

He said that the fourth National Assembly in 1999 sent his then Adviser on National Assembly to him that anytime a bill is to be sent to the House, it must come with money. Otherwise, the bill will not be passed.

Chief Obasanjo claimed that he rather chose to resend any bill that would be rejected by the National Assembly because he was not paying them bribes. Although the anchor of the programme insisted that the National Assembly accused Obasanjo of bringing cash to the floor of the House to induced them, which make them to tag Obasanjo as the grandfather of corruption in Nigeria. Chief Obasanjo denounced the allegations, saying he knew nothing about the said money and he had never given money to anyone in the name of inducement.
