“If you have committed an infraction of the quality and the Assembly deems it fit to announce, you should be impeached.”
He rejected concerns that Fubara’s retrenchment could spark uproar in the state, reporting, “I have heard people announce: ‘Oh, if they impeach him, there will be a breakdown of law and order.’ Rubbish! Nothing will happen.”
The Round Table recall that the political truce in Rivers State took a new turn on Friday, February 28, 2025, when the Supreme Court delivered the series of rulings on the state’s leadership oppose.
In a judgment read by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, a five-man panel of the court unanimously declined a cross-appeal filed by Fubara opposing the legitimacy of the Rivers House of Assembly under Speaker Martins Amaewhule. The court ordered Amaewhule to immediately resume sittings with other voted members of the Assembly.
In a further blow to the Rivers State Government, the apex court barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies from disbursing funds to the state government until it agrees with court orders.
Additionally, the court publicized the local government election conducted in the state on October 5, 2024, as invalid, further intensifying tensions in the oil-rich South-South state.
