The presidential candidate of the Labour Party during the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has faulted the approach by the President of the country, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to attract investors to the country.

President Bola Tinubu had traveled severally to have conversations with foreign investors with the hope of luring them into the country to boost Nigeria's productivity amidst the shabby economic situation the country finds itself.

Reacting to the approach on Sunday, Mr. Peter Obi, in an X-space, tagged "ParrellelFact" claimed the approach of meeting with investors to invite them to the country is wrong. He argued that the President does not need to leave the country before an investor comes claiming that investors will always come once the country is prepared and ready to give them a serene environment for their business to strive.

Mr. Peter Obi said “Nobody goes around searching for foreign investors. Foreign investors are like bees; when you keep the honey, they will boom towards there. We need to attract foreign investors and not chase after them,”

Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, last week stated that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is not "Chicken change". He claimed his administration is positively making progress in encouraging both local and foreign investors to re-enter the Nigerian economy. He boasted that he had been able to secure a $500 million deal with Germany and another $116 million deal with France within his six months in power.

Speaking in an interview with the Nation newspaper while receiving the newspaper's "Man of the Year Award", last week, President Bola Tinubu said “FDI is not ‘chicken change’. FDI is substantial, long-term financial commitments made by serious enterprises and investors. Right now, Nigeria is re-engaging with the global market – both foreign and domestic investors.

“We’ve secured a $500 million deal with Germany to fund renewable energy projects, particularly in rural Nigeria”, he stated.

“Our focused efforts to attract European FDI are yielding fruit, notably with the $116 million French investment in the I-DICE program, aimed at creating 65,000 start-ups and 150,000 jobs, particularly empowering women”.

Soaking on why he was fine suitable for the newspaper's "Man of the Year Award", the Nation said, "For a can-do spirit that has marked him out as a quintessential politician, for bracing monumental odds to emerge as the candidate of his party, the APC, and winning the 2023 presidential election; and for a raft of difficult but necessary decisions to reposition the country, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is Person of the Year of the National daily newspaper."
