Nasarawa Farmers Decry How Food Sellers From Northwest Deceived Them To Put Nigeria Into Danger

In the bid to lessen the hardships biting the citizens following the sudden hike in the prices of food items and essential commodities in the markets, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has met with the Nasarawa State Traders and Marketers Association.

The purpose of the meeting was to encourage the traders in the state to desist from hoarding food items to maximize price.

In the meeting which was held at the Nasarawa State Government House in Lafia on Tuesday, February 13th, 2024, Governor Sule spoke harshly against the decision by some traders who hoard food items for the price to soar so they can make huge profit. He asked the traders association to inform their members to desist from hoarding food items and tell them the dangers involved in food hoarding especially at this time when residents find it difficult to meet their end means.

Governor Sule said, "It's high time we come together to help ourselves. It's inconsiderate for someone to hoard food items while waiting for the prices to soar before selling them. It's even possible that at the time, such a person wants to sell his food items, he may lack buyers because of the scarcity of money. It's not good for someone who bought a 50kg bag of sugar at N32,000 to now turn around and sell it at N72,000."

"Stop hoarding food items. Hunger is ravaging the people. If we continue to hoard food items and people continue to die, we would answer before God," he added.

Governor, however, disclosed the measures his administration is taking to ameliorate the economic hardships on the residents of the state.

He said the government has purchased some quantities of rice for distribution to the residents, as well, the administration has purchased several CNG vehicles for sharing among selected people in the state to reduce poverty in Nasarawa State. He also promised to buy more quantities of food items from the food sellers which would be sold to the residents at a cheaper price.

Responding to the Governor, the President of the Nasarawa State Traders and Marketers Association, Musa Turaki-Gamji, said the traders in Nasarawa State are faced with the challenge of extortion by the indigenous thugs asking them to pay some taxes before their vehicles conveying their goods could pass.

Governor Sule asked the traders to always report such incidents to an appropriate authority whenever they occur as he also promised to address the challenge personally.

Speaking further, Turaki-Gamji, noted that "Nasarawa was blessed with a large amount of food produce last year, but businessmen from Kano, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and other places had seized the opportunity of the food boom to buy and hoard the food items in faraway places leaving the people in hunger and starvation.
