Misconceptions As Kwara Govt Declares War Against Street Beggars

Kwara street beggars news
Kwara Govt against street beggars
Interestingly, everyone knows what is good from what is bad, and everyone knows the features of a better society that befits our status. This is of no difference from a recent activity of the Kwara State Government to remove beggars from the streets of Ilorin, the state capital.

Yesterday, Thursday, November 30th, 2023 Kwara State Commissioner for Social Development, Hon. Opeyemi Oluwakemi Afolashade led her ministry to drive beggars away from the streets of Ilorin, Kwara State capital city.

Unfortunately, during the exercise, Hon. Afolashade stated that “The evacuation exercise is part of the Ministry’s responsibilities and a means to further ensure that the society is cleansed from any form of societal menace, thereby promoting environmental hygiene and values for the state.”

Amazingly, the state government knows that the presence of poor citizens littering the streets of its state capital is shameful, awkward and disrespectfully portrays the state before the global community. However, has the Kwara State Government taken a resolute approach to address the shameful situation?

The questions the Kwara State government may kindly ask itself may include the population of sons or daughters of those living in the GRA that were among the beggars driven away from the streets of Ilorin, yesterday.

When they were driven away, where was the destination Kwara State government saw them off to ensure they would not resurface today, tomorrow, and henceforth:

Unfortunately, the Kwara State government under the administration of Governor Abdurahman Abdulrazaq seems to have forgotten the purpose for which the good people of Kwara State cast their votes en mass for him, despite intimidations from all angles.

If the Kwara State government is to be sincere in the evacuation process, there is no doubt, that only people living on the streets of Ilorin reserved for wealthy people would remain in the state.

Has the Kwara State Government identified unemployment as the highest cause of street begging in Nigeria, with no peculiarity to Kwara State?

How many job opportunities has the Kwara State Government created for its people to have assured the administration that the alleged beggars are the lazy elements in the state?

Regrettably, Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman shouldn’t have been in the picture for this unwanted exercise, at this costly period.

Being the chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and a Governor elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Abdulrahman should be leading societal evangelism for perseverance and contentment as the country struggles through the hardship time brought about by the necessary policies made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Considerably, if President Tinubu could be begging Nigeria to bear with the reality of economic hardship facing the country, it would be administratively antagonizing Governor Abdulrahman to remove people from the streets to nowhere.

No one is in support of street begging but when you remove them from the streets, where do you take them to, is the concern.

Has the government provided job opportunities to engage everyone evacuated from the streets? This is the concern!

If they fail to hit the streets for survival and have no job to do to feed themselves, what does the government think would be their becoming?

Is the current evacuation from the streets of Ilorin not an invite to serious security challenges that may be the becoming of the evacuated street beggars, shortly?

Kwara State government may need to feed us with more pieces of information concerning the evacuation of street beggars from Ilorin or the activity is nothing different from the regard given to it, an administrative misconception.
