The Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Ukum Local Government Council of Benue State, Hon. Rev. Haanongon Tordue Gideon, has been allegedly removed from office by military personnel.
This was contained in a statement released and personally signed by the embattled Local Government Chairman. He accused his deputy, Hon. Yangeve Priscila Mnena, and secretary to the council of being behind his ordeal, even though he did not reveal what had transpired among them.
Hon. Rev. Haanongon Tordue Gideon, in his statement, argued against the prior information to the public that he voluntarily resigned from his position and handed over to his Vice Chairman, Hon. Yangeve Priscila Mnena.
He said, "My attention as the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ukum Local Government Council, Benue State, has been drawn to some purported social media news, making the rounds that I handed over my constitutional duties to my Deputy yesterday, February 21, 2024.
"I want to state clearly that no any formal handover function of some sort took place in my office as of yesterday February 21, 2024, at the Ukum Local Government Council Secretariat.
"I was in my office yesterday February 21, 2024, performing my enshrined duties as the Council Chairman, when the Secretary of the Council, and my Deputy accompanied by tough security personnel, including the Nigerian Army, the Police DPO, and SSS boss in the local government, under duress, forcefully sacked me and my Administrative PA out of the office, getting hold of the office keys and also withdrawn my police orderly.
"That this action took place without any backing documents or correspondence of any form.
"That me and my office until this moment, is yet to receive any notification to such effects, either from the Governor of the State who only owns the right, or the State Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
"That I still maintain the legitimately appointed Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ukum Local Government Council, in Benue State, but out of my office.
"That whoever would be claiming to be the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ukum Local Government Council, Benue State, other than my humble self at this moment, is doing so under their peril.
"I urge citizens of Ukum Local Government Area, to remain calm and be law-abiding, while going about their normal businesses, without fear.
The development has generated mixed reactions among residents of the local government area as the aide of vice Chairman, Hon. Yangeve Priscila Mnena, and the council secretary share some documents, though challengeable, reading to the claim that Hon. Rev. Haanongon Tordue Gideon voluntarily resigned his position and handed over to Hon. Yangeve Priscila Mnena, his deputy.
