Photo Credit: The Nation In the February 25th presidential election that was held in Nigerians, many citizens including the Lagosians tripped to the polling units to elect a new President. The former Lagos State Governor Bola Hamed Tinubu emerged as the new Nigerian President-elect, he lost his home state Lagos to one of the opposition parties, the Labour Party.
Lagos State was too important for the new President-elect, Bola Tinubu, to lose and as we go into the Governorship election on March 11, many loyalists of his political ideology are wondering what would be the outcome of the election and how tight the race may push their political master.
Take it or leave it, Tinubu is a known excellent political strategist and it would be too immature to see him losing Lagos State, back to back in the same election year. He must have gone back to the drawing board to reclaim the state.
Besides, it should be known that the governorship candidate of his party, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will surely benefit from some of the factors that worked against APC in Lagos State during the presidential election.
Certainly, religion is among the factors that influenced many Lagosians to cast their votes against the man behind the development of Lagos as a state, but Sanwo-Olu, being a Christian, will surely tap more votes from the Christian communities who cast protest votes against APC's Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.
Likewise, the other blocs of voters who cast their votes against APC in Lagos, during the presidential election could be adjudged to be personally anti-Tinubu. This could be confirmed by examining the voting pattern in the February 25th election.
While APC lost in the presidential election where Tinubu was a candidate, the same party won and cleared all the three senatorial seats that were contested on the same day. Also, the same APC that lost to the Labour Party in the presidential election won 21 of the 24 Federal House of Representatives constituencies that were contested in the state.
This is a clue that the voting pattern experienced on Saturday, February 25th in Lagos is a clear-cut protest vote against Tinubu and APC was not the target of some of the voters in Lagos.
