On September 22, 1948, the Hausa edition of a daily newspaper, "Gaskiya" reported that there were heightened tensions in Lagos over threats by the Igbo people to attack any Yoruba people who say anything against Nnamdi Azikwe.

There were allegations during the year in Lagos that the Igbo people were importing and stockpiling machetes, purposely to attack the indigenous Yorubas.

The Yorubas were triggered by the suspicious action of the Igbos in Lagos and they summoned a general meeting.

At the general Yoruba meeting, the Yorubas lamented and crucially condemned the Pilot and Comet newspaper for inciting the Igbos in Lagos to attack the indigenous Yorubas

The Igbos in Lagos were obsessed that any criticism against Nnamdi Azikiwe would be dealt with as it is an attack on the entire Igbos.

Waking to the bad signal that was posed by the Igbos in Lagos, traditional leaders in Zaria summoned all the Igbo leaders living in Zaroah to a meeting and they were told to stay away from attempting to stage an attack on the indigenous people of Zaria. Also in Kano, the Emir beefed up security around Sabongari. In Jos too, the authorities imposed a 10-year jail term on anyone seen with an arm.
