The main opposition party in Nigeria, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), has announced the postponement of its National Executive Council (NEC) earlier scheduled for August 18 to September 12. The meeting was earlier scheduled to be held on April 18 before it was shifted by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.
The meeting had been scheduled to elect who will succeed the former National Chairman of the party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, who was suspended by members of his Gboko ward in Benue State.
Sincerely, looking at how the executive of PDP shifted the NEC meeting, one could see a party scaring of severe disintegration which may result from the fallout that will emanate from the choice of who becomes the next National Chairman of the party.
Arguably, the race for who succeeds Senator Ayu is a major factor that may cause a critical crack within the umbrella of PDP
For instance, the immediate former Governor of Rivers State and the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is still a very strong force to reckon with within the PDP, and his political camp is still very strong in deciding who will occupy the seat of the party's national chairman.
Recall that, besides still being a very strong bonafide member of PDP, Wike still has his allies (G5) in PDP who are very strong and have gotten themselves back to the center of the table where decisions of who takes what is taken within the party.
Recalling that Wike's camp demanded equity within the PDP during the last election, the group has not shifted ground, and it may gain more membership this time.
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is arguably not joking with his thirst to pick the presidential ticket of PDP again in 2027, and this will certainly encourage him to influence who becomes the next national chairman of PDP.
This is a certain event that may split up the PDP after the new national chairman is elected, especially if Atiku's man gets through to the seat.
Arguably, some members of the PDP are currently retaining membership of the party purposely because of what they are looking forward to within the party during the next convention. Once they fail to get what they are looking for, there is the tendency them dump the party.
Some of these members may likely join the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party, or the proposed third force party.
Hard to agree but there is a tendency for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to also attempt cross-carpeting to either the Labour Party if Mr. Peter Obi agrees to become his running mate or a third force party if his presidential ticket is assured, this is in case his candidate fails to mount the seat of the national chairman of PDP.
Alhaji Atiku is undoubtedly unforgivable in his presidential ambition, and this may position many southern members of the party against PDP if Atiku's candidate has his way.
