According to the press reports, the immediate past Executive Governor Oyetola of Osun State has promised his blood brother and presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, votes of about 1,500,000 from the state. Oyetola stated this at the inauguration of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council in Osogbo, Osun state capital, yesterday.

Hard Talk

About 1.95 million electorates have registered to cast their vote in Osun State and the total number of Permanent Voter's Cards (PVC) collected in the state stands at about 77%, as of the July 2022 Governorship election in the state. Notwithstanding only 42.16% of the registered voters trooped out to cast their votes during the last governorship elections in the state.

Let us not talk about the proximity of if all the electorates that would troop to cast their votes in February in the state would all vote for APC, it is not just achievable. However, we can checkmate the figures, regarding the total number of registered voters in the state, the average turnout rate of the registered voters and the 1.5 million votes that is promised by former Governor Oyetola.

In the July 2022 Governorship election in Osun State, 801,040 of the total registered voters in the state came out to cast their votes for all the 18 political parties that contested the election. This figure included the number of void votes cast.

Considerably, it may be hard to achieve a turnout above 70% of the registered voters in Osun State and this stands at 1,330,000 votes which will be shared by all the 16 political parties that would be contesting the February presidential poll.

Now, let us consider the proximity of achieving total votes cast of 1.5 million in Osun State, which amounts to a turnout rate of 78.95%, that is hardly achievable though.

Better still, let us assume we go with the uncertain probability of achieving a 70% to 80% turnout at the presidential poll, then, we may begin to ask some questions.

Will they all cast their votes for APC?

With PDP as a ruling party in Osun State, will the party be so gullible to watch APC attain such a peak height?

How would APC that could not prevent an alleged electoral manipulation while in power, as being challenged at the Osun State Governorship Tribunal, overpower thee current ruling party in the state from sending it into oblivion?

No dispute, though arguably, Oyetola has great political goodwill, as well as Tinubu to garner enormous votes from the state but does Oyetola has the political charisma to activate his chances of pulling such a gigantic number of votes?
