Fresh Trouble Looms as Wike-Dominated Rivers House of Assembly Accuse Fubara of Gross Misconduct
Sim Fubara and Rivers House of Assembly
The settling political crisis that recently rocked Rivers State's political environment may take a new round of harsh breath as the State House of Assembly, densely populated by the supporters of the former Governor of the state and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accuse the governor of the state, Siminalayi Fubara of "gross misconduct".

The allegation of gross misconduct against Governor Fubara was contained in a letter personally signed by the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, and addressed to the Office of the Governor.

In the letter, the Rivers State House of Assembly accused Governor Fubara of making appointments into three parastatals without following due process.

The House of Assembly which sounds very tough on the allegation ordered the Governor of the State, Siminalayi Fubara, to withdraw the appointment with immediate effect, failure of which may attract another face-off between the Governor and the House of Assembly.

As part of the letter, the House of Assembly identified a "violation of law" by the Governor in the appointments of Mr. Goodlife Ben who was appointed as Acting Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Dr. Mrs. Ine Briggs appointed as Acting Director- General of Bureau for Public Procurement, and Mr. Tonte Davies appointed as Acting Administrator of New Cities Development Authority.

“These appointments violate the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and therefore constitute a gross misconduct and abuse of power on your part. We call on you to withdraw the appointments without further delay. Accept assurances of our warm regards”, Martin Amaewhule stated in the letter.

The House of Assembly had unanimously voted in affirmative to write the Governor to express how he has violated the extant law of the state and 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria following the above appointments, this came after the violation was observed and read out to the lawmakers by the Speaker of the House, Amaewhule.

No doubt, according to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, an allegation of "gross misconduct" that could be proved is liable to the impeachment of the accused officeholder. This implies a possible return of political restiveness to Rivers State political space following the recent face-off between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his erstwhile political godfather, Nyesom Wike.
